How do I explain Lyme Disease to my peers?

I cannot give you a script of exactly what to say because everyone’s peers are going to be different. However, I am happy to give tips! Your tone plays a large part in their reaction. Make sure you aren’t getting too over emotional, yet still show some vulnerability and that you are human. Start with the facts.

For example:

“I have Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial disease that can affect everything in the body, from joints and muscles to my brain and my heart.”

Then start to get into more personalized aspects of your experience.

“I am in a lot of pain all of the time. I am unable to go to school because of it etc. etc.”

Make sure to end with something along the lines of:

“If you have any questions at all please ask me. It would mean a lot to me if you are better understand what I am going through.”

Best of Luck
