Personal and Yard Prevention

Even if you already have Lyme disease you clearly want to avoid reinfection and additional infections.  Of course, you also want to keep the rest of your family and friends safe.  Here are a few tips.

  • Always, always, always be alert as to your surroundings and think about where ticks are likely to be.
  • Putting clothes through the hot dryer once you come inside will remove ticks.
  • Consider raising hens or guinea fowl in your yard.  They eat ticks.
  • Consider isolating your dog in a small room while ticks surface after a hike in an area with a high likelihood of tick encounter.  That way you can remove the ticks before they reach the rest of the family.
  • Ticks can be active even in the winter.
  • Research your dog tick repellent – not all kill the ticks.
  • Avoid the use of barberry in your landscaping.  It provides optimal habitat for mice and Lyme carrying ticks. Source
