Options for keeping ticks off

A few words on pros and cons

Many people have a preference for using natural vs. chemical ticks deterrents.  It is a personal choice. Some people use chemical deterrents on their clothing and just natural deterrents on their skin.

  • Natural tick repellentsThere are a variety of natural tick repellents now available to consumers as well as essential oils that have tick deterrent properties.  There has been some indication that ticks are deterred by citrus derived chemicals.2
  • Deet – Deet is a chemical insect deterrent but it is not long lasting.  Ticks carrying the Lyme bacteria actually cross higher concentrations of Deet than those that do not have the bacteria.  No ticks tolerate 20% Deet.
  • Permethrin – It is a chemical pesticide that may be as much as 2250 more toxic to ticks than humans.  It should not be confused with pyrethrum, which is a natural insecticide compound found in chrysanthemums.(a flower)
*fyi: You can buy products that combine deet and permethrin.
